• Golf Special Rules

WACC Board (revised – August 7, 2023)

1. The rules of the USGA, as modified by the CIF, the NCS, the WACC and all specific modifications made by local courses shall be the official rules of the WACC. It is the golfer’s responsibility to know and abide by rules. All cases of arbitration regarding rules interpretation will be made by the coaches and, if necessary, the resident professional.

1.1 Coaching may take place during competition as long as pace of play is not affected.

1.2 A gallery is permitted, however all gallery must remain at a distance of 30 yards and behind players at all times. The gallery is not to walk the fairways and must remain on the cart path. The rules of golf specifically prohibit players from receiving any counsel or suggestion from the gallery, parents, friends, etc. which might influence them in determining any aspect of their play. Information on The Rules of Golf or local course rules is not considered to be advice. Players may discuss golf shots, etc. with others in their foursome.

1.3 The sharing of clubs among players is prohibited.

1.4 Range finders are allowed, subject to NCS rules

2. Each team shall consist of six members.

3. The home team pays the greens fees for league dual matches unless AD’s agree otherwise.

4. League dual matches will be medal play for nine holes. “Double par” rules shall be used; the student-athlete shall pick up the ball after the double par stroke and circle the score. On a par four hole, there is therefore a difference between an uncircled eight and a circled 8. When totaling the score for those nine holes, a stroke shall be added for each circled score. The match becomes official after the last foursome has completed the fifth hole.

5. The host school shall decide which tee/markers to use on match day, working with all participant coaches. It is suggested that boys use tees closest to the 3,000 yard total and the girls use tees closest to the 2,500 yard total.

6. Coaches shall submit written lineups, based on ladder positions, to each other at the earliest opportunity prior to the match. The home team may use home course scorecards.

7. All golfers shall arrive and assemble at the first tee by the time the first foursome leaves the tee box. A student-athlete who arrives at the match site after that time will be unable to participate in the match and may be substituted for at that time; the name on the scorecard shall be changed. Two score cards will be kept for each golfer; the home scorecard shall be the official scorecard and must be signed and attested. At every match, every Threesome/Foursome shall gather on or near the recently completed green, and review and record their scores after all members of the group agree to those scores.

8. The home coach shall notify the local media of match results.

9. Team members may participate in other golf events, such as junior championships, recreation tournaments, etc. provided they comply with CIF, NCS and local high school rules.

10. Regarding Scoring in Dual Matches:

10.1 The best five of six medal scores shall be used to determine the winners of each match

10.2 Dual match ties will be broken in the following prioritized manner:

10.2.1 The scores of the sixth golfers from the teams in the tie. If one team has a 6th golfer and the other team doesn’t, the team with the 6th golfer wins.

10.2.2 The team whose first five scorers have the fewest double pars.

10.2.3 The team whose sixth player has the fewest double pars.

10.2.4 The team with the lowest team score on the #1 handicapped hole using the five scoring golfers.

10.2.5 The team with the lowest team score on the #1 handicapped hole using the five scoring golfers and the sixth golfer.

10.2.6 The team with the lowest team score on the #2 handicapped hole using the five scoring golfers. These procedures shall be continued until the tie is broken.

10.3 In determining the conference champion, points will be awarded in the following manner: two points for a match win; one point for a match tie; zero points for a match loss.

11. The conference tournament will consist of 18 holes. USGA rules will apply. The team hosting the tournament shall select the site for the tournament.

11.1 Foursomes shall be selected by league coaches at the postseason meeting.

11.2 Any team may substitute one player for another at the conclusion of nine holes. Their combined score counts towards the team total.

11.3 The following points will be awarded to the lowest team scores:

1st place 10 points
2nd place 7 points
3rd place 5 points
4th place 2 points
5th place 1 points

12. The conference champion shall be the team with the most combined points accumulated from the round robin (see 10.3) and the conference tournament (see 11.3). Teams in a first place tie shall share the conference championship. The conference champion shall be the automatic representative to NCS championship competition. Other NCS representation shall be based on conference standings. Ties will be broken in the following prioritized manner:

12.1 The record of the teams in the tie against each other.

12.2 The low team score at the WACC championships

12.3 The scores of the 6th golfers from the teams in the tie

12.4 The low team score on the # 1 handicapped hole at the league championships; then the # 2 handicapped hole; etc. until the tie is broken.

12.5 A draw from a hat by the league’s athletic directors at the first meeting of the year.

13. For purposes of entering the NCS area championships as an at-large golfer, ties shall be broken in the same manner as the NCS breaks ties, as determined in the NCS Sports and General Rulings Handbook.

14. If the conference tournament is rained out or otherwise cancelled, the entries to the NCS tournament shall be determined by the dual match league standings. At-large individual golfers shall be determined by a nine-hole playoff, with up to two players from each nonqualifying school participating. If this playoff is rained out, the at-large qualifiers shall be selected based on dual match records against each other with any ties broken using lowest accumulated score in those head to head matches.

15. The All-League First Team will consist of the top ten golfers based on scores at the league tournament. If there is a tie for the last position, all golfers in the tie shall be awarded allleague honors. Student-athletes who have the opportunity to play on a school team during the dual meet season but choose not to do so may participate in the tournament but are ineligible for all-league honors. All-League honorees must participate in the entire 18-hole tournament. The winner of the conference tournament shall be declared “Golfer of the Year.”

16. WACC schools that do not field a team during the dual match season are not eligible to participate as a team in the WACC tournament, but individual players from those schools may be entered in the WACC tournament. If that/those player(s) qualify for all-league honors based on their tournament score, the numbers of honorees on the all-league team shall be increased to accommodate the(se) additional student-athlete(s).
